Godzilla vs. Cthulhu: A Death May Die Story is a one-shot comic that was published by CMON Games in July 27 at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, as a tie-in for their game Cthulhu: Death May Die and a crossover with the famous Japanese kaiju Godzilla, officially licensed by Toho. It was written by Jonathan Maberry and features artwork by Bruno Abdias.
In Boston Harbor's Deer Island Prison, inmate and doomsday cult leader Kurt Metzger beats Mike Kozlov with a pipe, having discovered his true intentions as a spy. Metzger raves that he and his Nightmare Children, commanded by the ruler of the Outer Gods Azathoth and aided by their patron Tsathoggua, will soon bring about the end of the world. Kozlov refuses to divulge who sent him, and Metzger pummels him into unconsciousness. He awakens in the care of Stella, undercover as the prison's doctor, and explains to her that Metzger, a member of German intelligence during World War I, plans to awaken a monster: the Great Old One Cthulhu. Deep beneath the sea, Cthulhu's eyes open.
Knowing that the Nightmare Children will soon be exposed, Metzger prepares his men for a larger sacrifice than planned: the entirety of Boston. They hail Cthulhu as he emerges from the sunken city of R'lyeh. Stella contacts Sandra, another member of their network, who senses Cthulhu moving across the ocean floor and growing in strength as he feeds on the ocean. Countless dead fish float to the surface near Sandra's boat. As they wonder how they could possibly stop the monster, his presence disturbs the undersea slumber of Godzilla, who lets loose a roar.
From the prison, Kozlov and Stella watch Cthulhu rise out of Boston Harbor. He tries to console her as the Great Old One makes landfall, saying that they tried to stop this; she responds that history, should it survive, will condemn them for not trying harder. Godzilla's dorsal fins breach the surface near Sandra's boat, and she reports his approach to Stella as she follows the monster. Two biplanes engage Cthulhu, but their grenades have no effect. He retaliates by summoning an army of monsters, including Fishers from Outside, a Dhole, and a Gyaa-Yoth. Red lightning from Cthulhu's body strikes buildings as he snatches up civilians in his tentacles and soldiers futilely fire at him. Suddenly a boat strikes him in the head, sending him crashing into Quincy Market. Godzilla makes his presence known as the military pulls back. With a swing of his tail, he dispatches Cthulhu's minions.
Stella calls the general in charge of the operation to request the deployment of the experimental X-A Airships, armed with Atom-Smasher Cannons. The airships take off as Cthulhu constricts Godzilla with his tentacles and strikes him with blades of energy. Godzilla responds with a punch to the face that knocks Cthulhu off balance, then rips off one of his wings. Cthulhu unleashes a psychic blast that causes visions of other kaiju to appear around them. The visions of Mothra and King Ghidorah blast Godzilla, but all of them dissipate when the airships open fire. The Atom-Smashers topple Godzilla, leaving him bleeding on the ground, but fail to affect Cthulhu. As Cthulhu walks away from him seemingly triumphant, Godzilla suddenly rises back up. Having absorbed the energy of the Atom-Smashers' beams, Godzilla fires a powerful orange blast of atomic breath at Cthulhu, the wounded Great Old One standing motionless after the attack. Metzger pleads for Azathoth's forgiveness for their failure; Tsathoggua, materializing behind him, informs him that the god is neither merciful nor forgiving before killing him.
In the aftermath of the battle, Kozlov is unsure of Godzilla's fate but considers him a hero, having saved the world from Cthulhu's ravages. Godzilla returns to his undersea lair.
